Untitled Rocker is the consummation of a self imposed challenge to design a piece of furniture using making techniques I had not yet learned. Bent lamination, upholstery and veneer work were all brand new processes when I began this project. The four main surfaces that make up this chair are bent over one form, and arranged correspondingly as arms, back and seat. The fabric-like pattern of the wood veneer mimics the abstract upholstery. The rockers, the foundation of the chair, are hand shaped white oak. Although I made many plans and sketches, the design evolved as I acquired new skills and additional materials were added. The result is a rocking chair that was designed and made with one main driving force: process.
